A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged with a road traffic offence following a fatal collision in Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway, earlier this year.
Margaret Joy Todd, aged 85 and known as Joy, was struck by a white Vauxhall Vivaro van at approximately 10:20 on Saturday 3 January on Sheuchan Street near its junction with Park Lane. Emergency services responded to the scene, and the woman was transported to hospital, where she subsequently died from her injuries.
No other individuals sustained injuries in the incident. Police confirmed that a report would be forwarded to the procurator fiscal for further consideration.
Fatal collisions involving vehicles and pedestrians have prompted charges against drivers in several recent cases across the UK. A five-year-old girl died after being struck by a van in Newry in June 2026, while a van driver was charged in connection with a crash on the A737 at Howwood that killed a woman and four ponies, with trial proceedings scheduled for December 2027.
