A 61-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a 47-year-old woman who crashed her vehicle in Bridgend on Monday. The woman, from North Cornelly, collided with a wall on Coity Road at approximately 12:43 BST, but authorities determined her fatal injuries were unrelated to the collision itself. According to BBC News, armed police subsequently descended on a nearby sheltered housing complex called Ger-y-Nant, where the suspect was apprehended.

Wales Online reported that the woman was transported to hospital following the crash, with South Wales Police continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident at Ger-y-Nant. A substantial police presence remains deployed throughout the area, comprising six officers, multiple vehicles, and cordons established around the retirement complex.

Ger-y-Nant is a sheltered housing facility designed for residents aged over 60, containing 13 flats on Brook Street. The armed police operation targeted this location during the early hours of Monday evening, with officers entering properties as part of the arrest operation.

What have authorities said?

Chief Superintendent Jason Rees characterised the incident as a "deeply distressing" event and expressed gratitude to the local community for its cooperation, which he credited with enabling the arrest and preventing additional injuries. He also thanked residents who were temporarily displaced from their homes overnight, acknowledging the difficult circumstances they faced during the police operation and their assistance as authorities supported their return home.
