A man was airlifted to hospital with significant injuries after falling from cliffs on the south coast of Scotland on 17 October 2026. According to BBC News, the incident occurred in the area between Balcary and Rascarrel, near Auchencairn in Dumfries and Galloway. The man called for assistance after the fall at approximately 10:00, triggering a major multi-agency response.
The Scottish Sun reported that the response involved HM Coastguard teams from Kirkcudbright, Portling, and the Isle of Whithorn, alongside Kippford RNLI, the Scottish Ambulance Service, a specialist operations response team, police and two rescue helicopters. Police received the report at approximately 10:25 on 17 October 2026.

The scenic coastal area is well-known among walkers for its steep cliffs and panoramic views across the Solway Firth. In February 2025, a farmer became stranded at nearby Balcary Point while attempting to reach sheep on the cliffs; she was rescued uninjured, and the sheep were later returned safely, highlighting the hazards the terrain presents.
How was the man rescued?
Coastguard teams reached the scene and provided initial first aid treatment. Helimed paramedics then delivered further medical care before the casualty was winched to safety by the coastguard helicopter. He was subsequently airlifted to Glasgow for further treatment. The coastguard thanked local farmers and two men who assisted in guiding rescue teams to the location where the injured man was found.

In a statement, HM Coastguard said:
We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.
What do authorities say about cliff safety?
HM Coastguard has issued guidance emphasising that coastal cliffs can be more unstable than they appear, with landslides capable of occurring without warning. The organisation recommends that people maintain a safe distance from cliff edges, observe warning signs, and remain aware that strong wind gusts can affect balance and potentially prove fatal.

Walkers are advised to wear appropriate footwear and clothing, carry food and water, and keep a fully-charged mobile phone. A regional Coast Clever campaign has warned about cliff falls and other coastal hazards, advising people to check weather and tide times, stay clear of cliff edges and carry a charged phone. The coastguard also recommends adhering to signposted coastal paths and informing someone of your intended route and expected return time.
What happens next?
Police Scotland said enquiries were ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the fall. The man's condition was not disclosed in initial reports.
