Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party, has been selected as his party's candidate for the forthcoming by-election in Holborn and St Pancras, the London constituency previously held by Sir Keir Starmer. The election is scheduled for 8 October, and Polanski will attempt to secure his first seat in Parliament.
Polanski currently serves as a member of the London Assembly. His selection followed a vote by members of the Camden Green Party, where he defeated local councillor Hamza Chowdhury for the nomination.
In a statement about his candidacy, Polanski expressed confidence in his party's prospects despite the historical dominance of Labour in the area.
"We might be the underdog in this election but we have the momentum and we can win,"he said.
The constituency has been a Labour stronghold since its establishment in 1983. The party's candidate for this by-election is Sagal Abdi-Wali, who leads Camden Council.
The seat became available after Starmer, who served as Prime Minister, announced his decision to step down from his role as an MP. He cited a desire to concentrate his efforts on international affairs work as the reason for his departure from Parliament.
