Flood Warnings Issued Across Isle of Wight
Flood warnings have been declared throughout the Isle of Wight, with multiple roads rendered impassable and vehicles trapped due to flash flooding.
The Environment Agency (EA) issued an urgent flood warning for Carisbrooke and Hunnyhill on the Lukely Brook in Newport.
A second flood warning was activated shortly before 19:30 GMT for Blackwater and Newport on the River Medina following 35mm of rainfall earlier in the day. The EA urged residents to
"act now".
Flood alerts were also in effect for St John's in Ryde, the Eastern Yar, the River Medina, and Gurnard Luck.
Emergency Response and Impact
Firefighters responded to assist in rescuing occupants from three vehicles stranded in deep water on Pondwell Hill, near Ryde.
Flooding was widely reported across the island on Sunday evening, with social media users sharing instances of having to abandon their vehicles due to rising water levels.
Residential flooding was reported in Whitwell and Carisbrooke, as noted in posts on the Isle of Wight Community Information Group on Facebook.
Weather Forecast and Safety Advice
Rain was expected to continue until 22:00, with river levels and flood risks anticipated to begin decreasing by 01:00, according to the EA.
The EA explained that a flood warning indicates flooding is expected and advised people to protect themselves and their loved ones by relocating to safe areas along with pets and valuables.
"People are advised to move to higher ground or the upper floor of a building and turn off the gas, electricity and water if it is safe to do so."
They also recommended deploying flood protection equipment where possible.
Local Authority Alerts
Isle of Wight Council posted on Facebook that the Newport Quay Arts Centre on the Lukely Brook and the Aquatics Centre at Vicarage Walk were at risk of flooding.
Water levels were expected to be
"very high"at Caesars Road and Old Westminster Lane, with the river potentially bursting its banks and
"flooding roads and parked cars".
