A father has admitted responsibility for the death of his six-year-old son following a vehicle collision in County Londonderry. Declan McCourt, aged 47, entered guilty pleas to two serious charges at Londonderry Crown Court on Thursday.
Ethan McCourt sustained injuries in the crash that occurred on roads connecting the Magherafelt bypass and the Castledawson Roundabout on 20 June 2022. The child died nearly a week after the incident.
What charges did McCourt face?
McCourt, who resides at Bardahessiagh Road in Pomeroy, admitted to causing death by dangerous driving. He also pleaded guilty to an additional charge of causing death by driving without a valid licence, both offences relating to the same date as the collision.
What did the court hear?
During proceedings, defence counsel informed the court that McCourt had demonstrated "complete remorse" for the circumstances surrounding the incident. The legal representative characterised the matter as "a distressing case in the extreme."
Judge Roseanne McCormick addressed members of the public present in the courtroom who were connected to the case. She expressed the court's "sympathy for your loss" and acknowledged their conduct throughout the proceedings, commending them "for your dignity."
What happens next?
McCourt was granted bail pending further court appearances. The case has been adjourned, with sentencing scheduled to be determined on 5 November, when the court will fix a date for the formal sentencing hearing.
