Donaldson Trial Set to Begin Next Week Following Pre-Trial Hearing

The trial of former DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and his wife Lady Eleanor on sex abuse charges is set to begin next week after a pre-trial hearing at Newry Crown Court.

Trial Schedule Confirmed

The trial of former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and his wife Lady Eleanor Donaldson on sex abuse charges remains on track to commence next week.

A brief pre-trial hearing was held at Newry Crown Court on Tuesday.

Medical Report and Evidence

During the hearing, Judge Paul Ramsey was informed that a medical report concerning Lady Donaldson has been completed. The judge is scheduled to hear evidence related to this report on Wednesday.

"This will clear the way" for the trial to proceed with jury selection on 26 May, the judge stated.

Both the prosecution and defence legal teams confirmed their readiness for the case to begin.

Charges Against the Donaldsons

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, aged 63, faces 18 charges allegedly committed between 1985 and 2008. These include one count of rape, four counts of gross indecency, and 13 counts of indecent assault.

Lady Eleanor Donaldson, 59, is charged with five counts related to aiding and abetting the alleged offences committed by her husband.

Both defendants deny all charges brought against them.

Hearing Attendance and Background

Neither Sir Jeffrey nor Lady Donaldson was required to attend Tuesday's hearing.

The couple were arrested at their home in County Down more than two years ago in connection with these allegations.
