An independent federal MP has been struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in regional Victoria, leaving her with critical injuries. According to The Guardian, a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee has been arrested at the scene, and authorities have activated a joint counter-terrorism team to investigate the incident.

The incident occurred on Murphy Street in Wangaratta at approximately 3.35pm on 19 October 2026, when Helen Haines, the MP for the federal seat of Indi, was struck by a white Toyota Landcruiser. Reports indicate Haines was unloading items from her car's boot when she was struck and sustained severe lower-body injuries. A knife was located and seized from inside the vehicle by police.

The driver exited the vehicle and was arrested at the scene by a passerby. He will be interviewed in relation to the incident. Victorian police have described Haines as being in hospital with critical injuries.

Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason told journalists that police are investigating whether the incident was intentional and whether the parties involved knew each other.

We've still got a lot to work through here. As you can imagine, it's been quite dynamic this afternoon. We've got quite an extensive crime scene.
Mason stated that detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit were en route from Melbourne to process the crime scene and collect evidence.

Mason also indicated that specialist counter-terrorism police may be involved in the investigation.

There's some talk that there might be specialist terrorist-related police involved in the investigation. We've notified our crime and counter-terrorism command and they're currently liaison and assisting our investigators.

What do authorities say about community safety?

Police have provided assurance that there is no ongoing threat to the broader community. Mason told media that

I can provide some assurance to the community that we certainly do not have any intelligence that there is any further or ongoing threat to any other person or the broader community. We are treating this as an isolated incident at this point in time.
At this stage, there is nothing to indicate that the two parties are known to each other, though police continue to investigate.

How have political leaders responded?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that a suspect is in custody and that a major police investigation is underway.

There is a major police investigation underway, and I can confirm that a suspect is in custody. The Australian Federal Police, Victorian Police, and Asio are working together on this. The joint counter-terrorism team has been activated, but the motive is not known.

Albanese declined to speculate on the motivation for the incident at this early stage.

It is too early, though, to speculate on motivation, and we won't be doing so. We'll allow the authorities to do their work. Obviously, Helen Haines has suffered … this is a serious incident, and so our thoughts are with Helen and her recovery at this time.
He emphasised that security arrangements for MPs are based on threat levels and noted that heightened risk has occurred in recent times.

Albanese described Haines in personal terms, saying

Helen Haines is incredibly hard-working. She is fiercely intelligent, but most importantly, she's just a thoroughly decent human being, full of integrity and respected right across the parliament, and from everyone who comes into contact with her, she is a well-loved member of her community, and this will come as an incredible shock to that community.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong posted on social media that

my thoughts are with [Haines] her loved ones, friends, team and community following this shocking and deeply disturbing attack. We are all hoping for Helen's full recovery.

Greens leader David Shoebridge wrote that he was

Horrified to hear of the apparent attack on my friend and colleague Helen Haines. Helen is an extraordinary human being and brings people together like few others. In grief and solidarity wishing her a complete recovery.
Deputy Greens leader Steph Hodgins-May said she was
deeply shocked and saddened to hear reports of an attack on my friend and colleague Helen Haines. Helen is a wonderful person who cares deeply about her community and the people she represents. My heart goes out to Helen, and I wish her strength and a full recovery.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson expressed that she was

horrified and saddened
at the news and stated that
My thoughts are with Helen, her family and her staff … Violence against any elected representative, whoever they are and whatever they stand for, is never acceptable in Australia. Members of parliament and their staff must be able to serve their communities without fearing for their safety. I thank the emergency services and the members of the public who rushed to help.

Nationals frontbencher Michael McCormack, whose electorate shares a border with Haines', wrote on social media that he was

Sending my love and best wishes to Helen Haines for a full and speedy recovery. Such awful news.

What is the broader context of threats against MPs?

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke highlighted a concerning trend in the treatment of elected representatives. He revealed that reports of harassing and threatening behaviour against MPs and their offices have increased significantly in recent years.

The year before last, we had 951 reports of harassing and threatening behaviour against various high office holders. The more recent financial year, that 951 has gone to 1,067.
This increase reflects a broader pattern of escalating tensions in Australian political discourse.

Haines has represented the federal seat of Indi since 2019. Before entering Parliament, she worked as a nurse, midwife and health researcher. Her background in healthcare and community engagement has made her a respected figure across the political spectrum.

What assistance was provided at the scene?

A nearby barber reportedly rushed to help and assisted the driver out of the vehicle. The swift response of bystanders and emergency services was crucial in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

What has Haines' family said?

Haines' family released a statement thanking those who assisted her.

This afternoon, our beloved Helen was involved in an incident outside her Wangaratta Electorate Office, and is receiving medical care. We thank the swift assistance of bystanders and the dedicated health workers who assisted her, and police for their response.
The family requested privacy and stated that
Our family, and Helen's staff, will be making no further comment at this time, and ask that their privacy be respected by the public and media.

What happens next?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke were scheduled to address the media at 7pm on 19 October to provide further details on the investigation. The Major Collision Investigation Unit will continue to process the extensive crime scene and work with counter-terrorism specialists to determine the circumstances and motivation behind the incident. Police investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to establish whether the incident was targeted or intentional.

Acting Superintendent Mason confirmed that

We've got our investigators from the Major Collision Investigation Unit who are currently en route to Wangaratta from Melbourne. So they've got significant travel time as well as the time it will take for them to thoroughly process the crime scene once they arrive.
