Rhod Gilbert Returns to Television Post-Cancer Treatment
Comedian Rhod Gilbert is making a return to television following his treatment for head and neck cancer. The 56-year-old, originally from Carmarthen, was diagnosed in 2022 and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy. After enduring what he described as "brutal" treatment, he was eventually declared cancer-free.

New Series Featuring Gilbert and His Dog
Gilbert's upcoming project marks his first significant TV appearances since his diagnosis. The series, titled Wagging Rights, features Gilbert alongside his dog, Piscen. Announcing the show, Gilbert explained their goal was to demonstrate "what a poorly trained dog and a chaotic human can achieve."
"Across six episodes a team of the UK's top dog show judges will evaluate our progress as we attempt to train our pets across a series of skills – from obedience, scent work, agility, freestyle and ball sports,"Gilbert said about the series.
Treatment and Recovery Journey
Following his diagnosis, Gilbert received treatment at Velindre Cancer Centre, a specialist facility for non-surgical cancer patients, where he had been a patron for 10 years. He received his first clear scan in October 2023 and expressed gratitude for his recovery, stating that "life is sweet."
Gilbert's Reflections on His Health
In May 2024, Gilbert spoke to BBC Wales about his health, saying,
"Honestly I'm wonderful."
He acknowledged the challenges faced by cancer patients, adding,
"This sounds absurd because as any cancer patient will tell you, it's a new normal. Things are never quite the same again, but I sort of feel better than I've ever done in my life,"he told Lucy Owen on BBC Radio Wales.
