New GP Walk-In Clinic Usage Data

One of the new flagship GP walk-in clinics has treated 183 patients in its first five weeks, according to the latest figures.

The clinic, located at Lochee Medical Centre in Dundee, is part of a network of facilities established by the Scottish government to provide GP-led care without the need for an appointment.

Data obtained by the BBC through freedom of information laws reveals that between the clinic's opening and 30 April, 183 people attended the Dundee facility, which operates daily from 12:00 to 20:00.

Separate statistics released by the Scottish Conservatives for the first GP walk-in centre in Edinburgh indicate it saw 987 patients in its first month.

First Minister John Swinney has previously stated that the walk-in clinics will provide more than one million additional GP and nurse appointments.

The initiative aims to address the so-called "8am rush" for doctors' appointments and was launched with 16 proposed locations across Scotland.

In its election manifesto, the Scottish National Party (SNP) has pledged to increase the number of walk-in clinics to 30 sites if re-elected, arguing that these clinics will offer timely access to quality care close to patients' homes.

Criticism and Political Responses

However, the walk-in clinics have faced criticism from both the Royal College of General Practitioners Scotland and BMA Scotland, who argue that the funds would be better allocated to core general practice services.

Other political parties contesting the Holyrood election have also made commitments regarding GP services.

Scottish Labour has promised to "bring back the family doctor" and guarantee a GP appointment within 48 hours if elected.

The Scottish Conservatives, who have expressed criticism of the walk-in clinics, have similarly pledged that everyone will be able to see a GP within 48 hours.

The Scottish Liberal Democrats have proposed enabling patients to use the NHS App to book, reschedule, and cancel appointments, while Reform UK Scotland has promised a new pay deal for GPs and an expansion of frontline services at GP surgeries.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Greens have committed to ensuring there is one GP for every 1,000 patients.
