Overnight Closure of M8 Westbound for Bridge Repairs
The westbound carriageway of the M8 motorway has been closed overnight to facilitate repairs on a bridge that was struck by a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) earlier this week.
Since 13:40 on Tuesday, traffic on the westbound M8 has been limited to a single lane between Junctions 4A and 5 as a safety measure following the incident near the Harthill service station.
The carriageway was scheduled for a full closure from 20:00 on Tuesday until 06:00 on Wednesday, with a signed diversion route implemented to manage traffic flow during this period.
Motorists were advised to anticipate significant delays on Wednesday morning, as traffic was expected to remain restricted to a single lane even after the overnight closure.
Statements from BEAR Scotland
David Bishop, South East Bridges manager at BEAR Scotland, the roads maintenance company responsible for the repairs, provided an update on the situation.
"This bridge over the M8 has been significantly damaged and needs to be made safe before the carriageway below can be fully reopened to traffic.
Our team will be working through the night to carry out the necessary repairs and will do everything possible to get traffic flowing again as safely and quickly as possible.
The carriageway will reopen tomorrow, however it's likely that a lane closure will still be in place while we complete repairs.
Please expect long delays and avoid the route if you can. We're grateful to road users for their patience and understanding."
Local Road Status
The B718 local road that passes over the affected bridge remains open to traffic, operating under temporary traffic light control to manage vehicle flow safely during the repair works.
