Freight Train Derailment Causes Extensive Rail Disruptions
A freight train derailment near Bilbrook in the Wolverhampton area has resulted in significant disruptions to rail services, with cancellations and service alterations expected throughout the day.
The incident occurred at low speed and caused damage to overhead electric wires, impacting multiple rail routes in the West Midlands region, according to West Midlands Railway (WMR).
Impact on Rail Lines and Services
All rail lines between Wolverhampton, Stafford, and Shrewsbury have been affected, with trains unable to operate in either direction on these routes.
Services operated by Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, London Northwestern Railway (LNR), Transport for Wales (TfW), and WMR have all experienced disruptions. Rail replacement bus services are currently running between Telford and Wolverhampton, while rail services continue from Telford Central to Shrewsbury.
National Rail has confirmed that LNR and WMR trains are not running in either direction between Wolverhampton and Telford Central.
Additionally, a bus shuttle service is in operation between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, traveling via Darlaston and Willenhall.
Damage and Repair Efforts
WMR's website provides details on the damage caused by the derailment:
"This derailment has damaged the overhead electric wires and knocked over the supports which keep them in the air,"
WMR has indicated that repair work following the incident may continue until Thursday.
Additional Service Adjustments and Customer Information
Transport for Wales has stated that it is unable to operate trains in either direction between Birmingham International and Shrewsbury, with rail replacement services running between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury.
Passengers have been advised that tickets will be accepted on selected alternative services at no extra cost.
Avanti West Coast has also informed customers that tickets are valid on one of the operator's two services immediately before or after their originally booked train.
