Wembanyama Shines in Spurs' Double-Overtime Victory
Victor Wembanyama, who finished third in this season's MVP voting behind Nikola Jokic and winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, delivered an outstanding 40-20 performance as the San Antonio Spurs secured a double-overtime win against the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, in the NBA Conference finals opener.
The Western Conference's first and second seeds faced off in a highly anticipated series featuring Wembanyama, the season's Defensive Player of the Year, against the Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who earned the NBA Most Valuable Player award for a second consecutive year.
The best-of-seven series began with an intense game on Monday, where San Antonio had the opportunity to clinch the win at the end of regulation, followed by Oklahoma City having a chance in overtime. Ultimately, the Spurs prevailed with a 122-115 victory.
Wembanyama's alley-oop dunk with 22 seconds remaining in the second period of overtime extended the Spurs' lead to six points, concluding the game with 41 points and 24 rebounds for the French forward.
At 22 years and 134 days old, Wembanyama became the youngest player in NBA history to record 40 points and 20 rebounds in a playoff game. He also joined Wilt Chamberlain (1960) as the only players to achieve this feat in their Conference finals debut.
"He has a rare desire to step into every moment that's in front of him," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said of the 2023 first overall draft pick.
"I think he has showed in his three years in a lot of different situations with a lot of different circumstances that he's going to attack those moments. He has some rare God-given ability."
San Antonio's rookie guard Dylan Harper contributed significantly with 24 points and 11 rebounds. The Thunder experienced their first playoff loss after sweeping the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers in the earlier rounds.
Alex Caruso led the Spurs with 31 points off the bench, while Jalen Williams added 26 points. For Oklahoma City, Gilgeous-Alexander recorded 24 points and 12 assists.
"We knew it was going to be a dog fight," said Gilgeous-Alexander, who received his MVP award prior to the game. "We've just got to be better, me in particular."

Upcoming Games and Series Outlook
Game two of the Western Conference finals is scheduled for Wednesday in Oklahoma City. Meanwhile, the Eastern Conference finals will commence on Tuesday with the New York Knicks hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers.
