Ryan Emphasizes Fast Start Against France
Ireland lock James Ryan has highlighted the critical importance of a quick start for Ireland in their Six Nations opener against France. The match is set to take place at the Stade de France on Thursday at 20:10 GMT, with the kickoff moved earlier to avoid clashing with the Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday.
Andy Farrell's Ireland will begin their 2026 campaign on French soil, where they have faced challenges historically. Although Ireland secured a victory over France in Marseille two years ago and won at the Stade de France against Scotland and South Africa during the 2023 World Cup, they have not defeated Les Bleus at this venue since 2018.
"I think a big start is definitely unbelievably important for us," said Ryan.
"They get the tails up and the crowd get behind them and they're into their flow, so a fast start for us is always important but particularly so this weekend.
"I think going away from home over in Paris, you've got to start well."
Set-Piece Battle Expected to Be Key
Ryan, who has earned 76 caps for Ireland since his debut in 2017, anticipates that the set-piece will be a crucial area of contention during the game. He noted the significance of the line-out drive and scrum in France's style of play.
"The line-out drive and the scrum is a huge part of their DNA, it's probably something that gives them a lot of belief," Ryan added.
"So it's a big challenge for us as well up front in terms of the set-piece. We're unbelievably excited about that too."
Potential Debut Boost from Edwin Edogbo
If Andy Farrell opts to introduce a debutant, Munster's Edwin Edogbo is the likely candidate, probably coming off the bench. The inclusion of the uncapped 23-year-old, who weighs 127kg, would strengthen Ireland's set-piece efforts.
Edogbo has overcome nearly two years sidelined by Achilles injuries but has impressed with Munster this season, earning his call-up to the national squad.
"He's hit the ground running really well in here and he's a serious athlete," Ryan commented.
"Since he's come back from that long lay-off with the injuries he's had, he's been really impressive. He's been great since he's come in."
