Russell Claims Victory in Canadian Grand Prix Sprint

George Russell secured victory in the Canadian Grand Prix sprint race after starting from pole position. The competition between Mercedes teammates Russell and Kimi Antonelli escalated notably during the event, marking their first significant clash in the championship.

Early in the race, Russell and Antonelli were involved in a collision, and Antonelli went off track twice while contesting the lead. The second off-track excursion by Antonelli allowed McLaren's Lando Norris to move into second place. The trio then engaged in a close battle, running nose to tail until the race concluded.

Antonelli, who ultimately finished third behind Norris, expressed dissatisfaction over team radio, accusing Russell of forcing him off the track and suggesting that Russell deserved a penalty for his actions.

"Russell had pushed him off track and deserved a penalty," Antonelli stated over the radio.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who seldom communicates over the radio during races, instructed Antonelli to focus on driving rather than complaining.

"Concentrate on the driving, not on the radio moaning," Wolff advised.

Maintaining composure at the front, Russell managed to keep the lead. On the penultimate lap, Antonelli experienced a third off-track incident while attempting an outside pass on Norris at the first corner, but Norris successfully defended his position.

Russell’s win, followed by Norris in second and Antonelli in third, reduced his championship deficit to Antonelli to 18 points. This victory was a crucial return to form for Russell after Antonelli had won three consecutive Grand Prix events.

Antonelli continued to voice complaints about Russell’s driving during the slowing down lap, prompting Wolff to intervene once more.

"Kimi, we talk about this privately, not on the radio," Wolff admonished.
