Contract Extension Secured Until 2030

Sonia Bompastor has agreed to extend her contract as Chelsea's head coach until 2030, signaling the club's strong confidence in the French manager despite current challenges in the Women’s Super League (WSL).

Bompastor, who took charge of Chelsea in the summer of 2024 on an initial deal through 2028, led the team to an unbeaten domestic season in her first year, securing a treble and reaching the Women’s Champions League semi-finals.

Although Chelsea, the defending champions, have slipped to third place in the WSL, trailing leaders Manchester City by 12 points, the contract extension was reportedly agreed upon before Chelsea’s recent consecutive losses to Arsenal. Both the club and Bompastor maintain full confidence in their partnership.

Recent Challenges and Team Outlook

After experiencing back-to-back league defeats for the first time in her managerial career, Bompastor expressed optimism about the team’s ability to recover ahead of their upcoming match against Tottenham in the WSL.

“We work hard with intensity,” she said. “We are facing a tough moment because we are not used to losing games but we also trust the quality we have in the squad, and I know it’s small tweaks for us to be in a better position. I’m confident from what I saw this week in our training sessions, we’ll be able to bounce back on Sunday.”

Background and Achievements

Before joining Chelsea, Bompastor was head coach of Lyon (now OL Lyonnes), where she won the Champions League as a coach in 2022. She was Chelsea’s preferred choice to succeed Emma Hayes, who had led the club for 12 years during a highly successful period.

In the current season, Bompastor has guided Chelsea to the League Cup final, where they will face Manchester United at Ashton Gate in March. The team has also advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals, having been the highest-ranked English side in the league phase, and reached the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Statements from Bompastor and Club Officials

Speaking to Chelsea’s club channels, Bompastor expressed her satisfaction with the contract extension and her commitment to the club’s ambitions.

“I am delighted to extend my stay here,” she said. “I want to thank the club for their unwavering support and the trust they have shown in me. It’s a privilege to lead this team and I could not be prouder to represent Chelsea.
“Our success as a team is built on grit, resilience and intensity and we do not settle for anything less than winning. We have so much left to fight for, we are competing on four fronts, and we will give everything, every single day to make our supporters proud. My focus is firmly on bringing more success to this amazing club.”

In a joint statement, Chelsea’s sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley emphasized Bompastor’s importance to the club’s long-term vision.

“Since the day Sonia joined Chelsea, she has delivered a level of excellence that has elevated our women’s team on and off the pitch.
“Her impact has been immediate and significant, and the standards she sets embody exactly what we want this club to represent. Sonia is not only a key part of driving our success today, but also an integral part of the long-term future we are building.
“Renewing her contract reflects our belief in her leadership, her vision and the stability she brings to the club.”
