The Scottish Premiership title race intensifies after dramatic weekend action, with Rangers closing in on Hearts, Celtic staging late comebacks, and Motherwell maintaining their challenge. New signings and managerial experience play key roles as fans weigh in on the thrilling competition.

Rangers Narrow Gap with Hearts After 4-2 Win

Rangers' 4-2 victory over Hearts has reduced the lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to just two points.

The title race has become increasingly competitive following an eventful Sunday filled with last-minute goals and high-scoring matches, adding further excitement to the battle for the championship.

Celtic mounted a comeback from two goals down at Rugby Park, with January signing Julian Araujo scoring the decisive winner. This marked the third occasion in a week that the defending champions secured a crucial late goal.

At Ibrox, Rangers overcame twice falling behind to league leaders Hearts, with Youssef Chermiti's hat-trick propelling Danny Rohl's team to a commanding 4-2 win.

Meanwhile, Motherwell extended their unbeaten streak to eight games by defeating Aberdeen 2-0, maintaining their hopes of contention.

Current Standings in the Premiership

Hearts continue to lead the table with 57 points, but their advantage has been trimmed to two points over Rangers, who now have 55 points.

Celtic's late resurgence lifted them to 54 points. The defending champions hold a game in hand, scheduled away to Aberdeen, compared to the teams above them.

Motherwell sit 10 points behind the leaders but also possess a game in hand over the top two clubs.

Impact of New Signings

January acquisition Julian Araujo scored the winning goal for Celtic.

An interesting aspect of Sunday's matches was that none of the goalscorers from the top four clubs were part of their squads last season, when Celtic were already well-positioned for the title.

At Rugby Park, Sebastian Tounekti scored for the third time this season, Benjamin Nygren netted his 16th goal since joining Celtic in the summer, and January arrival Araujo secured the three points.

At Ibrox, the scoring began with Marc Leonard, who joined Hearts four weeks prior, and Claudio Braga added to his impressive season tally.

January signing Ryan Naderi contributed to the build-up for Rangers' first goal, while Youssef Chermiti continued to impress following his high-profile transfer from Everton for an initial £8 million. Despite early criticism, Chermiti's recent performances, including a double in the derby against Celtic, have won over some skeptics.

Former Celtic defender Jackie McNamara commented on Chermiti's potential but emphasized the need for consistent contributions during the title run-in.

"The biggest thing is consistency," McNamara told the Scottish Football Podcast. "Has he got attributes? Yeah, he can move, he's physical, he's good in the air. "Technically, he's not brilliant, but he scores a hat-trick, he looked world-class against Celtic in the second half. That was more down to Celtic's defending and in Wilfried Nancy's time. "I think if you're going to lead the line for Rangers, you've got to have that every game. You've got have that consistency. "You've got to be on the end of everything. He's away with the match ball. So what's his reaction to that now? Strikers are all about confidence, but for him there has to be some kind of consistency there."

Michael Stewart expressed reservations about Hearts' recent signings, questioning their immediate impact.

"When Hearts are missing a few players, it's caused them big problems," Stewart said on the Scottish Football Podcast. "I'm not sure about some of the guys that have been brought in. They needed them to come and hit the ground running, and it's definitely not happened. "Islam Chesnokov is one we've spoken about a lot and he's played a couple of games now. I've not seen him take a full back on once yet. "Ageu's been in since the summer, he's had injury problems, first start. Hearts are a team that have intensity and physicality, and they've got a real threat at top of the park. And I'm not sure that I'm seeing it with those guys. Same with Pierre Landry Kabore. "Jordi Altena's come in with a lot of hype, obviously a highly-regarded full-back, but I'm not sure that the manager's convinced about him."

O'Neill's Experience Influences Celtic's Comeback

Martin O'Neill's arrival in January has had a significant impact on Celtic, with the manager praising his team's resilience during their comeback at Kilmarnock. He compared the current squad's character to his successful Celtic side from over twenty years ago.

Jackie McNamara, a former member of that celebrated team, highlighted O'Neill's inspirational qualities and believes his experience will be crucial in the upcoming weeks.

"Martin's main attributes are in the dressing room," McNamara said. "He's good at the right moments to get a reaction, to get the best out of the players and I think he's had the best of the players in his first spell there after Brendan Rodgers and then he's had to do it again, he's had to chase again after Wilfried Nancy's reign. "Had he been in the whole time, Celtic, for me, would have been clear at the top at this moment."

Rangers' Position in the Title Race

Since Danny Rohl took charge on 26 October, Rangers have accumulated the most points in the league. Their recent win over Hearts was vital in maintaining this momentum. Additionally, Rangers now boast the best defensive record among the top three teams.

Rohl faced criticism for his team selection during a 1-1 draw at Motherwell and raised some eyebrows by suggesting that a point was a satisfactory result. However, former Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson praised the team's response.

"He's done a brilliant job," Thomson told BBC Scotland. "He was questioned a bit during the week at Fir Park, conceding late to an excellent Motherwell team. "But to bounce back against the league leaders, with Chermiti getting his hat-trick, was the icing on the cake. "It's going to be nervy for them all. It changes every week. I do think Rangers are in pole position now to strike. It's there for them. "But I certainly wouldn't rule out the other two."

Motherwell Remain in the Mix

Motherwell maintained their challenge with a 2-0 victory over Aberdeen at Fir Park. Despite this, manager Jens Berthel Askou remained cautious about making bold claims regarding their title chances.

"The league is not over," Askou said. "Whether we are a part of it is for you to discuss."

Michael Stewart also advised against dismissing Motherwell, noting their strong defensive record and few losses compared to the teams above them.

Motherwell face upcoming matches against Celtic and Hearts before the league split, and their form could keep them competitive.

"It wasn't just a fascinating weekend of games, there was midweek as well," Stewart said. "You know, it's been two full rounds of games and Motherwell's performance against Rangers was outstanding. "Having drawn too many games could be their Achilles heel but they've only lost three. They don't look like conceding goals, don't look like they're going to lose games. "When the post-split fixtures come out, it's going to be a bloodbath, really."

Fan Perspectives on the Title Race

Celtic fan David expressed optimism following the team's recent performance.

"Wow that result just goes to show that Celtic have not given up on winning the title this season. Let's hope the players respond for the rest of the season. Big games coming up."

Hearts supporter Mike commented on the impact of recent signings and the team's position.

"Unfortunately our three high profile signings, Ageu, Chesnokov and Kabore were posted missing in the 45 minutes they each played. We are really missing Cammy and Shanks. Rangers are a different team to the one we beat twice already this season. Playing with confidence and probably favourites for the title. However, we are still top and need to win our next matches before the split."

Motherwell fan Derek reflected on the club's current success.

"I'm calling on all Motherwell fans to pinch themselves. This is absolutely the best time since the Ancell Babes. In folklore, we've had this team's exploits passed down through the generations. Even the Willie Pettigrew years can't beat this. A trophy would be the icing on the cake. Take a bow, Jens Berthel Aaskou."

Rangers supporter Chris shared his thoughts on recent performances and the season outlook.

"We have played two of the form teams this week and finished it closer to the top of table than we started. The second half performance against Hearts was as good as we have played this season. But I think the season will likely go down to the wire. They are all big games now."

Hearts fan Frank provided a realistic view of the club's prospects.

"To keep our challenge up we need to dispatch Falkirk and Aberdeen next - two of the few clubs who have beaten us this season. Realistically, we are punching above our weight and need the Old Firm to lose nerve, but under their new managers I don't think that's likely. "I've enjoyed the ride so far but have never got carried away. If you'd told me at the beginning of the season that we would be disappointed with third place I'd have laughed out loud."

Rangers fan Elaine expressed enthusiasm after the recent win.

"At last! A team with some fight about them. Brilliant to see big Youssef Chermitti getting his hat-trick. Now we can believe we are in a title race. If we hadn't gifted Hearts two goals, they never looked like scoring. Now we hunt!"

Celtic fan Henry encouraged support for the team.

"Fantastic result at a tricky venue, we have a game in hand and are only three points behind the league leaders. Celtic can still win this league. All the supporters need to get behind the team and stop all this 'sack the board' nonsense."

Motherwell fan Stuart reflected on the team's recent performance.

"Wasn't the best performance by a long way, but possibly more satisfying to win when not playing as well as we have had in recent games. We were a bit careless in possession and gifted opportunities to Aberdeen, but created some great chances for ourselves. We still need to be more clinical, but I'm living the dream as a Motherwell fan this year - where could we end up?"
