Romero’s Sixth Red Card for Tottenham
Christian Romero received a red card against Manchester United, marking his sixth dismissal for Tottenham across all competitions.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank described the situation as a "perfect storm".
Different opinions have emerged regarding Cristian Romero's tackle on Manchester United midfielder Casemiro approximately 30 minutes into their Premier League match at Old Trafford.
Romero had been under scrutiny throughout the week after publicly criticizing Tottenham's management for insufficient investment in the squad. Despite this, the Argentine defender once again found himself defended by Frank.
The match was goalless when Romero was shown a straight red card for his foul on Casemiro, and Tottenham ultimately lost 2-0.
"He apologised to his team-mates in the dressing room,"Frank stated after the match, having previously argued on Friday that excessive attention was given to Romero's social media comments and defending the "passion" of his captain.
The facts of the incident at Old Trafford were straightforward.
Romero slightly overhit the ball, which meant he was marginally late in playing a pass. The ball deflected off Casemiro's left foot, causing Romero to strike Casemiro's right shin with full force before playing the ball.
There was very little time to react, illustrating the fine margins present in Premier League matches.
Was the Sending Off the Correct Decision?
The Premier League Match Centre classified Romero's challenge as serious foul play, stating it was "made with excessive force and endangered an opponent."
Former Premier League official Darren Cann agreed with the decision.
"Romero makes a forceful challenge on Casemiro which is, in law, undoubtedly a serious foul play tackle,"Cann told .
"It was a really excellent decision from referee Michael Oliver, who was brilliantly positioned."
Even Frank acknowledged that referee Oliver’s decision to send Romero off was correct.
"The red card is a red card,"he said.
"But I have watched it back five times, he clearly tried to go for the ball."
Romero to Remain Captain Despite Red Card Record
Having already been sent off once this season against Liverpool in December, Romero will now miss Tottenham’s next four Premier League matches due to suspension. He will not play again domestically until the rematch against Arne Slot’s side on 15 March.
However, the statistics surrounding Romero’s disciplinary record are more concerning.
On two occasions in separate matches against Brentford, the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel concluded that Romero avoided red cards for tackles that should have warranted dismissal.
Despite this, Romero has become the first player to receive two red cards in the Premier League this season. Since joining Tottenham in 2021, he has accumulated four red cards in the league, the highest total for any player during this period, and is tied for the most red cards for any Tottenham player in the competition overall.
In total, Romero has received six red cards for Spurs.
"I didn't know that,"Frank admitted when informed of Romero’s disciplinary record in response to a previous question.
Frank was questioned about the appropriateness of Romero retaining the captaincy, given the negative example set by his disciplinary issues.
"No, there is not,"the Danish manager replied when asked if he regretted Romero’s status as captain.
"I think it is fair to say he doesn't have any intention to get a red card after 28 minutes. He is sorry for the incident. He apologised to his team-mates in the dressing room. He is one of the most important players."
Frank’s response to whether he would consider removing the captaincy was similarly direct.
He later commented on the challenges faced by the team, which was already missing 10 senior players at kickoff and subsequently lost full-back Destiny Udogie to injury.
Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario also defended Romero during a TNT Sports interview.
"He's our captain and today he made a mistake,"Vicario said.
"But we know the player he is.
He's going to come back stronger, for sure, and he'll help us throughout the rest of the season."
However, not all pundits shared this supportive view.
Match of the Day analyst Danny Murphy criticized Romero, stating:
"He let his team-mates down. It is irresponsible, especially after a week where he's been talking about recruitment and a lack of players.
He's the captain, the leader - he needs to do better."
Joe Hart, former Tottenham goalkeeper, expressed similar concerns on TNT Sports.
"You just know he's got that switch,"Hart said.
"He doesn't need to do that. He just smashes him.
Is he a good leader? I don't know. He must be from what we don't see because Thomas Frank seems to stand by him no matter what."
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves also voiced disappointment.
"When he looks at it back he'll think 'why did I do that?',"Hargreaves said.
"He's club captain. He needs to be leading by example - but that's not the example he needs to be setting."
Frank has confirmed that Romero will retain the captaincy upon his return for the Liverpool match, which will be scheduled between two Champions League last-16 ties, where Juventus and Atletico Madrid are among the possible opponents.
In the interim, Tottenham must hope for steadier performances, as Romero’s dismissal contributed to another defeat. With local rivals West Ham gaining points, the threat of relegation remains a pressing concern.
