Gary Rowett's Oxford United drew 2-2 with Marti Cifuentes' Leicester City in September 2025.

Leicester City, currently struggling near the relegation zone in the Championship, are preparing to appoint Gary Rowett as their new head coach.

According to BBC Radio Leicester, Rowett, aged 51, conducted training sessions with the Foxes on Wednesday.

He is expected to be the permanent successor to Marti Cifuentes, who was dismissed three weeks ago.

Rowett previously had a brief playing stint with Leicester and arrives with 14 Championship fixtures remaining. The club is positioned 22nd in the table, two points below the safety threshold.

His managerial career includes leading five Championship clubs: Birmingham City, Derby County, Millwall, Stoke City, and most recently Oxford United, where he was relieved of his duties after nearly a year in charge.

Rowett was dismissed by Oxford United following a run of one win in 10 games.

Leicester's struggles under interim management

Since Marti Cifuentes' departure, Leicester have lost all four matches under interim manager Andy King. Additionally, the club has been penalised with a six-point deduction after being found guilty of breaching spending regulations, following an extended legal process.

This points deduction, combined with a seven-game winless streak that includes six defeats, has resulted in Leicester dropping into the Championship relegation zone.

The East Midlands club fell into the bottom three on Saturday after Blackburn Rovers overtook them by defeating Queens Park Rangers. Leicester were also eliminated from the FA Cup by Southampton.
