Infantino Apologises for Comments on British Football Supporters

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has issued an apology following controversial remarks he made about British football fans, which drew criticism from supporter groups.

During the World Economic Forum held in Switzerland last month, Infantino remarked that it was "really special" that no British nationals were arrested during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

In response to concerns regarding the high costs associated with attending matches at the upcoming 2026 World Cup, the Football Supporters' Association (FSA) urged the Swiss-Italian official to focus on "making cheap tickets" instead of "making cheap jokes about our fans."

Clarification and Apology to UK Fans

In an interview with , Infantino clarified that his comments were intended as a light-hearted observation to emphasize that the Qatar tournament "was a celebration" and "a peaceful event."

He extended apologies specifically to fans from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, stating it was "not my intention" to offend them.

The 55-year-old further expressed his admiration for English football, acknowledging that he was mistaken in suggesting that English fans "just go and riot around the world" and referring to them as "criminals."

Defending the FIFA Peace Prize Award to Donald Trump

Infantino also addressed the decision to award US President Donald Trump the inaugural Fifa Peace Prize prior to the 2026 World Cup draw in December last year.

The prize was intended to honor an individual who had "taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace" and "united people across the world."

While acknowledging the "strong reaction" to the award, Infantino maintained that, "objectively" Trump "deserves it" due to his role in "resolving conflicts and saving lives and saving thousands of lives."

Potential Lifting of Russia Ban Despite Ongoing Conflict

Regarding the suspension of Russian football clubs and national teams from all competitions by Fifa and Uefa in February 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Infantino indicated that Fifa will "definitely" consider lifting the ban despite the ongoing war.

He explained,

"We have to, because this ban has not achieved anything, it has just created more frustration and hatred."

Infantino added that allowing Russian boys and girls to participate in football matches in other parts of Europe would be beneficial.

Opposition to Banning Israel and Calls for Statutory Changes

Infantino also expressed opposition to calls for Israel to be banned from international football competitions. He suggested that Fifa should explore amending its statutes to prevent boycotts.

He stated,

"We should actually never ban any country from playing football because of the acts of their political leaders."

Infantino, who has served as Fifa president since 2016, emphasized the importance of maintaining open ties, saying,

"Somebody needs to keep the ties open."
