Tucker's 94 Keeps Ireland's World Cup Hopes Alive

Stand-in captain Lorcan Tucker matched his best ever T20 International score with an unbeaten 94 to lead Ireland to a 96-run victory over Oman in the Men's T20 World Cup Group B match held in Colombo.

After defeats to Sri Lanka and Australia in their opening games, Ireland required a win and an improved net run-rate to maintain hopes of advancing in the tournament. The victory marked their first at this World Cup since defeating England in 2022.

When Tucker came to the crease, Ireland were struggling at 25-2. However, the wicket-keeper's commanding innings propelled Ireland to a total of 235-5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Oman’s innings saw Aamir Kaleem score a half-century, but wickets fell rapidly thereafter. Josh Little spearheaded Ireland's bowling attack with figures of 3-16, helping to bowl Oman out for 139 in 18 overs.

Ireland will face Zimbabwe on Tuesday at 09:30 GMT, still requiring a win and favourable outcomes in other matches to progress to the Super 8s stage.

Tucker Steadies Ship for Ireland with Classy Knock

With Paul Stirling injured, Lorcan Tucker assumed captaincy duties, while Tim Tector opened the batting in Stirling's absence. Ireland continued to struggle for a solid top-order partnership as Oman’s Shakeel Ahmed made early inroads.

The 38-year-old Ahmed celebrated his wickets with a gesture reminiscent of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, dismissing Tim Tector (5), Ross Adair (14), and Harry Tector (14) during the powerplay. Ireland found themselves at 47-3 after six overs.

Curtis Campher contributed 12 runs off seven balls but failed to build a lasting partnership. It was left to all-rounder Gareth Delany to join Tucker and provide momentum to Ireland’s innings.

The duo compiled a 101-run partnership off 56 balls, transforming Ireland’s shaky start into a commanding position that culminated in their highest ever T20 international total.

Delany scored 56 runs from 30 balls, including seven boundaries, but it was Tucker’s innings that dominated the headlines. His inventive knock featured 10 fours and four sixes.

The only moment of concern came when, with Ireland at 67-4, Vinayak Shukla appeared to have Tucker stumped. However, the third umpire ruled that Oman’s wicketkeeper had dislodged the bails without the ball in hand, granting Tucker a reprieve.

Tucker capitalised on this chance, delivering the best knock of the tournament to date, surpassing Tim Seifert’s 89 against the UAE for New Zealand.

He ended the innings unbeaten but was left stranded at the non-striker’s end as George Dockrell scored 35 runs off nine balls facing the final three deliveries, denying Tucker a maiden T20 century.

If Ireland’s 93 runs in the last five overs of their innings appeared to secure the result, the team was also mindful of improving their net run-rate.

Oman reached 63-2 after the powerplay and passed 100 runs in the 11th over, maintaining a scoring rate ahead of Ireland’s. However, wickets fell too frequently to make the target achievable.

Aamir Kaleem led Oman’s batting efforts, becoming the oldest player in T20 World Cup history to score a half-century at 44 years old. He reached his fifty in 28 balls, breaking the record set just days earlier by teammate Muhammad Nadeem against Sri Lanka.

Most encouraging for Ireland was Josh Little’s bowling performance. After a wicketless run in his previous four T20 internationals, Little finished with impressive figures of 3-16.
