Late Ireland Push Sets Unexpected Chase for England
Women's T20 World Cup, Group 2, Southampton
Ireland 118-9 (20 overs): Prendergast 26 (18), Little 26* (15); Ecclestone 3-22, Dean 2-11, Gibson 2-10
England 119-6 (17.3 overs): Sciver-Brunt 48 (38); Prendergast 2-17
A significant injury concern involving England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt overshadowed England's four-wicket victory against Ireland at the T20 World Cup in Southampton.
With nine runs required to win, Sciver-Brunt, who had recently returned from a calf injury, retired hurt on 48 runs and proceeded directly to the dressing room.
England later confirmed that she experienced "tightness" in her left calf, the same leg previously injured, and she left the field as a precautionary measure.
Following Sciver-Brunt's departure, England also lost Freya Kemp, who scored two runs, but managed to secure the win chasing 119 with 15 balls remaining.
While England now hold two wins from two matches at the start of their home World Cup campaign, the fitness of their captain remains a significant concern.
Prior to the injury, Sciver-Brunt appeared untroubled, contributing to a 64-run partnership with Heather Knight after early wickets fell, including Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Amy Jones, and Alice Capsey, all dismissed within 10 balls.
Bowling Dominance from England
Earlier in the match, Sophie Ecclestone claimed three wickets, while Dani Gibson and Charlie Dean took two wickets each, as England controlled much of Ireland's innings, which ended at 118-9.
England now have four days before their next match, which will be against Scotland at Headingley.
Meanwhile, Ireland, having lost both of their opening matches, remain in Southampton to face winless New Zealand on Friday.
