Sciver-Brunt Returns to Form with Half-Century

England concluded their World Cup preparations with a five-run victory against India in their final warm-up match held at Cardiff. This win serves as a crucial confidence boost ahead of their tournament opener against Sri Lanka scheduled for Friday evening.

England posted a total of 171 for six, highlighted by a half-century from captain Nat Sciver-Brunt. This innings marked the most time she has spent at the crease since recovering from a calf injury sustained six weeks earlier. Teammate Amy Jones remarked on Sciver-Brunt's performance, noting her return to form after a brief hiatus.

"She looks back to her normal self after a little bit of a break,"
"It was great to see her whacking it everywhere."

Vice-Captain Charlie Dean Leads in Field

Despite her batting contribution, Sciver-Brunt did not participate in the Indian innings, leaving vice-captain Charlie Dean to assume leadership duties on the field. Sciver-Brunt had previously expressed concerns about feeling "rusty in the field" following Monday’s warm-up against Australia. Her limited fielding capacity raises some concerns given the anticipated demanding schedule of the World Cup.

Bowling Strategy and Late Innings Drama

Mindful of the intense World Cup schedule, England rested key bowlers Lauren Bell and Sophie Ecclestone during this match. This decision allowed Issy Wong and Tilly Corteen-Coleman to complete their full quota of four overs each. However, England’s bowling depth was tested in the final overs. Richa Ghosh capitalized on the penultimate over bowled by Wong, scoring 21 runs, and then hit a towering six off Linsey Smith in the 20th over.

Despite the late surge from India, Alice Capsey, who was wicket-keeping for the first time in an England shirt, maintained composure to effect a stumping of Richa Ghosh, securing the victory for England.

"It got a bit close at the end there but I thought the way the girls closed out the game was brilliant,"
"It feels like everything’s been ticked off. We’re all really excited for Friday."

Batting Highlights and Team Selection Insights

Other encouraging signs emerged for the World Cup hosts. Amy Jones delivered a confident half-century from the top of the order and appears set to open the batting, having been selected ahead of the out-of-form Sophia Dunkley in both warm-up matches. England demonstrated their ability to accelerate towards the end of their innings, adding 67 runs in 35 balls following an hour-long rain delay midway through their innings. Dani Gibson contributed an unbeaten 30 runs off just 12 balls.

"Opening the batting can be a rollercoaster, but I’m riding the wave into our next game,"
Jones said.

Capsey’s Wicket-Keeping Performance

Alice Capsey completed her debut match as wicket-keeper with a flawless performance, conceding zero byes and recording a catch and a stumping. She stood up to the bowling of Dani Gibson and successfully caught a deflection from the bat of Bharti Fulmali. While Jones’s position as wicket-keeper remains secure, Capsey’s competent display provides reassurance that England’s official reserve wicket-keeper can perform effectively if required.

"She was brilliant,"
Jones said. "I’ve previously only caught little glimpses in training, but she looks like a natural."

Returning Players and Upcoming Fixtures

Both Lauren Bell and Sophie Ecclestone are expected to return for the match against Sri Lanka, which will see England fielding a full-strength side.

"It feels like everything’s been ticked off. We’re all really excited for Friday,"
Jones reiterated.

India’s Perspective

India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed confidence in her team’s readiness for their World Cup opener against Pakistan at Edgbaston on Sunday, despite the loss to England.

"These two practice games have given us a lot of confidence. How Richa batted is a big positive for us – she’s a match-winner. Hopefully we play fearless cricket in our first game."
