Durham Head Coach Expresses Support for Ben Stokes
Durham secured one win and one draw in the two matches that Ben Stokes participated in during May. Ryan Campbell, Durham's head coach, has publicly expressed his unwavering support for England Test captain Ben Stokes, affirming that the county's door "is always open" for him.
Campbell further noted that Stokes is currently in "good spirits and working hard" during his training sessions with Durham.
Stokes Dropped for Second Test Against New Zealand
Stokes was omitted from the England squad for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval, which commenced on Wednesday. This decision follows an investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) into an incident where Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson breached a midnight curfew after England's victory over the Black Caps in the first Test at Lord's.
The 35-year-old all-rounder may now feature for Durham in their upcoming County Championship fixture against Northamptonshire scheduled for Friday.
"Our doors are always open for any of our Durham boys," Campbell told BBC Radio Newcastle.
"If Ben happens to walk through it, I will definitely be waiting there with arms open wide."
Uncertainty Over Stokes' England Captaincy
Stokes' future as England's Test captain remains uncertain. England head coach Brendon McCullum refrained from providing any assurances regarding Stokes' captaincy during a media briefing on Monday.
Despite this, Campbell, an Australian, has voiced his strong support for Stokes and expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which his player has been treated since the nightclub incident became public last week.
"Ben knows he made a mistake and broke the curfew, but some of the reaction has been a little over," Campbell said.
"I'm a bit old school, I like a beer after a game of cricket if you've got 10 days off but I'm not the coach, I don't run that system."
Stokes' County Participation and Future Prospects
Stokes featured in two county matches for Durham ahead of the New Zealand series. Campbell has indicated that there is approximately a "75% chance" that Stokes will play against Northamptonshire.
With his availability for the third Test at Trent Bridge, starting on 25 June, still uncertain, the four-day County Championship match could potentially be Stokes' last red-ball cricket appearance before the Test series against Pakistan scheduled for mid-August.
"Ben is a competitor and he loves to play and he wants to play," Campbell added.
"He put his hand up and said he made a mistake.
From what I've seen, he's in good spirits, he's back in training, working hard and the rest will take care of itself."
Campbell Reiterates Durham's Support
Campbell's comments underscore Durham's readiness to welcome Stokes back and support him through this challenging period in his career.
