Ben Stokes Impresses for Durham Amid England's Test Challenges
Ben Stokes is participating in his third match for Durham this season, having previously recorded a top score of 45.
Rothesay County Championship, Division Two, Banks Homes Riverside (Day Two)
Northamptonshire 450: Vasconcelos 187; Raine 3-63
Durham 183-3: Stokes 95 (118), Rhodes 58*; Conway 2-23, Sanderson 2-64
Ben Stokes scored 95 runs for Durham against Northamptonshire as England's national team struggled in their Test match against New Zealand at The Oval.
The England captain, who was absent from the second Test after being made unavailable pending an investigation into an incident at a London nightclub, was dismissed just five runs short of a century by seamer Harry Conway shortly after tea at Chester-le-Street.
This innings would have marked Stokes' first century in first-class cricket since he scored 141 against India in the fourth Test in July 2025, which was also his first Test century since August 2022.
His 118-ball innings, which included 18 fours, represented a positive return to form for the all-rounder with the bat.
Since his century against India at Old Trafford, Stokes had accumulated only 350 runs in nine first-class matches at an average of 25 prior to facing Northamptonshire.
Batting at number five, Stokes came to the crease with Durham at 30-3 on day two, responding to Northamptonshire's total of 450 all out.
The 35-year-old formed a 153-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Will Rhodes.
Stokes was dismissed shortly after England's stand-in captain Joe Root and Harry Brook advanced England's score to 100-3 while chasing an unlikely target of 463 to defeat New Zealand in the second Test.
Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson are currently under investigation for their involvement in an incident at a London venue following England's first-Test victory, during which they breached the team's midnight curfew.
It is understood that the investigation is progressing towards a resolution that may allow the pair to return, although an official announcement might not be made until after the conclusion of the second Test.
While all outcomes remain possible, there is an increasing likelihood that Stokes will resume his role as England captain for the third and final Test at Trent Bridge, scheduled to begin on Thursday.
