England Captain Stokes Withdrawn from Durham Match
Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have been withdrawn from the remainder of Durham and Surrey’s ongoing county matches following a request from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
A statement from Durham on X confirmed the decision:
"Ben Stokes has been withdrawn from the remainder of Durham’s County Championship match against Northamptonshire at the request of the ECB. Colin Ackermann will replace Stokes in the Durham 11."
Both players were omitted from England’s second Test squad after breaching the team curfew while celebrating England’s first Test victory against New Zealand at Lord’s. Interim captain Joe Root led a relatively inexperienced side that has faced difficulties against New Zealand at The Oval, entering Sunday’s play needing 281 runs with only five wickets remaining.
Stokes’ County Performance and Team Dynamics
Stokes chose to participate in Durham’s match against Northamptonshire, bowling 25 overs on Friday and scoring an impressive 95 runs during Saturday’s session, with national selector Marcus North in attendance.
While England head coach Brendan McCullum expressed concerns regarding Stokes’ mental state, Durham’s coach Ryan Campbell offered a contrasting perspective:
"All I have seen is the same old Ben Stokes who loves being the Durham dressing room, who loves being around a cricket ground and who hasn’t missed a beat."
Following Stokes’ withdrawal, Colin Ackermann has been named as his replacement in the Durham XI.
Atkinson’s Performance and Replacement
Similarly, Gus Atkinson delivered a strong performance for Surrey against Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens, taking four wickets for 61 runs. He will be replaced in Surrey’s XI by Tom Lawes.
Upcoming Third Test and ECB Investigation
England’s third Test against New Zealand is scheduled to commence at Trent Bridge next Thursday. The ECB’s investigation into the curfew breach by Stokes and Atkinson remains ongoing, with no announcements expected regarding the outcome or the third Test squad until after the conclusion of the match at The Oval.
