Owner Jailed Following Fatal Dog Attack

A man has been sentenced to prison after his XL bully dog fatally mauled an 84-year-old man in a brutal attack.

Sean Garner's dog, Toretto, was shot 10 times after the animal attacked elderly neighbour John McColl on a street in Warrington, Cheshire, on 24 February 2025.

The 31-year-old Garner was found guilty last month of owning a dog that caused injury while dangerously out of control. He received a 12-year prison sentence at Liverpool Crown Court.

Details of the Attack and Aftermath

John McColl suffered severe injuries and spent a month in intensive care before passing away five weeks after the attack.

The court heard that McColl had walked onto Garner's driveway on Bardsley Avenue when the dog lunged at him and

"would just not let go"
. The dog then stood guard over McColl while neighbours were unable to intervene.

Additional Information

Following the attack, Toretto was shot multiple times to prevent further harm.
