UK Cleared of Paying Rwanda Over Cancelled Asylum Agreement
The UK will not be required to pay Rwanda millions of pounds following the collapse of the asylum agreement that was cancelled by Keir Starmer soon after he assumed office, an international court has ruled.
The Rwandan government had sought to sue the UK for more than £100 million, alleging that the UK had breached the terms of the deal.
Originally signed by the previous Conservative government, the agreement was intended to have the UK pay Rwanda to host asylum seekers who had arrived illegally in the UK.
During the three-day hearing held in the Netherlands, lawyers representing the UK argued that it was
"entirely logical"that the plan would be scrapped when Labour came to power and that it was
"simple common sense"that no further payments would be due.
