Aberafan Maesteg MP Stephen Kinnock has been appointed the new Secretary of State for Wales after being promoted to the Cabinet by new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham. He will replace Jo Stevens, the MP for Cardiff East, as Burnham sets out his new ministerial team.
Rhondda MP Chris Bryant has also been promoted to a new role as the next Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Among the other names in Andy Burnham’s new team is Vale of Glamorgan MP Kanishka Narayan, who has been promoted to Minister for Artificial Intelligence.
Who is Stephen Kinnock?
Stephen Kinnock was born in Tredegar and is the son of former Labour leader Neil Kinnock and former Member of the European Parliament Glenys. He has two children with former Danish prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt.
Mr Kinnock was elected to represent Aberavon at the 2015 general election before Sir Keir Starmer appointed him junior health minister for England when Labour came to power at Westminster in 2024. He represented the Aberafan Maesteg constituency, which had been newly renamed at the time.
What else has changed in Burnham’s team?
Chris Bryant’s move means the Rhondda MP will take up the next Northern Ireland secretary role, while Kanishka Narayan’s promotion gives the Vale of Glamorgan MP a new post as Minister for Artificial Intelligence.
Jo Stevens is leaving the role of Secretary of State for Wales. Wales News had previously noted that the Wales Secretary insisted she was supportive of the Welsh language after criticism, and that Andy Burnham had been appointed the new UK Prime Minister.
