UK Military Chief Highlights Elevated Threat Level
The United Kingdom is currently experiencing risks and threats greater than at any point since the Cold War, according to the head of the military. Chief of the Defence Staff Sir Richard Knighton made these remarks during an interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
"This is the most dangerous period that I have known,"
Sir Richard emphasized the increased frequency of Russian incursions into UK airspace. He noted that in the first five months of this year, there have been as many incursions by Russian strategic aircraft as in the entirety of 2025, cautioning that Russia risks "crossing a line."
Strategic Defence Review and Future Preparedness
Sir Richard described last year's Strategic Defence Review as a "call to arms." He explained that while the armed forces have traditionally prepared for short, contained conflicts, the current security environment requires readiness for prolonged conflicts similar to the war in Ukraine.
His comments precede the anticipated release of the Defence Investment Plan, which has faced multiple delays. This plan will outline funding strategies for new equipment and defence infrastructure over the next decade. Initially scheduled for autumn 2025, the document's publication is now expected within weeks.
Defence Secretary John Healey recently stated that the prime minister is "determined to publish" the plan before the NATO summit on 7 July.
Government Funding and Military Capabilities
In response to criticism from former defence secretary Lord Robertson regarding the UK's reduced military capabilities, Sir Richard expressed confidence that government ministers recognize the threats and are increasing defence spending.
"Exactly as the prime minister says, we need to spend more on defence and do it faster. The challenge for ministers is to make those difficult trade-off decisions,"
Sir Richard also addressed the evolving nature of warfare, highlighting the growing importance of drones and autonomous systems in future conflicts.
Heightened Threats and Russian Activities
Regarding threats to the UK, Sir Richard stated:
"I'm very clear that this is the most dangerous time I have known in my working life.
And the risks and threats to this country are greater than I have known since the Cold War.
And it is important that society and all of us recognise and understand that and that may mean that we need to make different choices and different priorities."
He noted that Russia is testing the UK's traditional military defences as well as employing other tactics such as cyber attacks, sabotage, and assassination attempts.
"So Russia is definitely raising the stakes and risks crossing a line,"
These statements underscore the heightened security challenges facing the UK and the need for adaptive strategies to address them.
