Incident Overview
Three men in their 30s sustained serious injuries following a suspected racially-motivated assault at Helen's Bay, County Down.
At 21:00 BST on Monday, police were alerted to an assault involving three men who had been attacked by another group of three individuals on the beach. The incident reportedly followed an earlier verbal altercation.
Arrests and Investigation
Shortly after the report, police stopped a vehicle carrying three men aged 28, 23, and 21. They were arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.
During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered a quantity of drugs. Consequently, the 23-year-old was additionally arrested on suspicion of possession of class A and class B drugs.
Victims' Condition
The three assaulted men suffered a number of serious injuries, which were described as "serious, but non-life threatening," according to Ards and North Down District Chief Inspector Hutchinson.
Police Statement
"This matter is being treated as a racially-motivated hate crime. We know that this was shocking for those enjoying the evening sunshine on the beach and want to reassure the local community that our investigation is progressing at pace," said Chief Inspector Hutchinson.
"We had an increased police presence in the area to ensure that everyone left the beach safely, and were on the scene quickly - but want to commend members of the public who helped to prevent the altercation escalating further."
Current Status and Appeal
The three men arrested remain in police custody as the investigation continues.
Authorities have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have video footage to come forward and assist with the investigation.
