SDLP Assembly Member Patsy McGlone Announces Retirement
The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) assembly member Patsy McGlone has confirmed he will step down from Stormont at the next assembly election.
The 66-year-old representative for Mid Ulster is the party's longest-serving Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) at Stormont.
McGlone was first elected as a councillor in 1993 before joining the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2003. During his tenure, he has also served as a deputy speaker.
Party Leader Praises McGlone's Service
SDLP leader Claire Hanna acknowledged McGlone's longstanding commitment to his constituency and the party.
"His electoral record was a testament to the trust and respect he has earned from the community he serves."
"While Patsy may be stepping down from the Assembly, he will always remain an important part of the SDLP family and a valued source of wisdom and advice," she added.
"Knowing Patsy, I suspect he still has plenty of work left to do before next year's election."
Upcoming Assembly Election and Candidate Selection
The next assembly election is scheduled for 6 May 2027. Political parties are currently in the process of selecting candidates to contest the 90 available seats.
