Officer Injured After Being Hit by Stolen Police Vehicle in Downpatrick

A police officer in Downpatrick was seriously injured after being hit by a stolen police vehicle during a foot chase. The officer fired his weapon and a 27-year-old man was arrested for attempted murder.

Officer Injured in Incident Involving Stolen Police Vehicle

A police officer sustained serious injuries after being struck by a stolen police vehicle in Downpatrick, County Down.

The officer had been pursuing a suspect on foot following an incident where another vehicle failed to stop for police on Fountain Street.

Upon returning to their patrol car, officers discovered an individual in the driver's seat who then drove directly towards the officer.

During the event, the officer

"discharged one round from his firearm"
according to police statements, but was nonetheless hit by the police car.

A 27-year-old man has been apprehended on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident.

Medical Response and Current Condition

Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones commented on the response efforts:

"Urgent medical treatment was provided at the scene by police colleagues, who were also supported by members of the local community,"

she said.

The injured officer was transported to hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for treatment. His injuries are described as serious but, at present, are not considered life-threatening.
