Mother Sentenced for Infant Daughter's Murder

A mother who murdered her baby daughter has been sentenced to a minimum of 19 years in prison after receiving a life sentence.

Nicole Blain was found guilty last month of killing her 19-day-old child, Thea Wilson, who died from injuries consistent with blunt force trauma or shaking.

Blain stated that she discovered her daughter lying on the floor of her Greenock flat on 14 July 2023 and claimed that another child had dropped the newborn.

At the High Court in Glasgow, Judge Lord Scott rejected this explanation as a

"patently absurd"
version of events, stating that Blain had inflicted
"catastrophic deadly violence"
on Thea.

The judge further described Blain's assertions as

"a feeble attempt to evade responsibility"
for her actions.

During the sentencing, dozens of members of the public gathered in court, and cries of

"monster"
were heard from the public gallery as Blain was led away to begin her sentence.
