Man jailed for murder of elderly friend after prolonged attack

A paranoid cannabis user who tortured his 93-year-old friend for over 24 hours has been sentenced to a minimum of 22 years in prison.

Martin Glynn was subjected to punches, kicks, stomping, and strangulation by Samuel Field, 40, at Field's residence in Desborough, Northamptonshire, in September 2024.

Field, formerly residing on Gold Street, was convicted of murder and received a life sentence. The prosecution characterized the extended assault as "senseless" and "entirely pointless".

Following the attack, Glynn was unable to walk and died three months later on 26 December. During the assault, Field recorded a series of voice messages concerning a conspiracy theory.

Details from the sentencing hearing

At Northampton Crown Court, prosecutor Adrian Langdale KC described the relationship between Field and Glynn as a "long-standing imbalanced relationship".

The court was informed that the two men had known each other for approximately 20 years, with Glynn providing Field with substantial financial support, including weekly cash payments of £200.

The prosecution stated that Field's drug use escalated following the breakdown of a personal relationship, which left him in an "aggressive paranoid state towards those around him".

Langdale further explained that in the months preceding the attack, Field had become increasingly threatening towards his mother, brother, neighbours, and landlord.

Judge's remarks and ongoing coverage

Judge Stephen Eyre described the incident as a "sustained attack" involving "prolonged and repeated beatings".
