Lightning-Induced Fires Challenge Firefighters in Sussex

Fire crews in Crawley and across Sussex have been actively responding to multiple fires and property damage caused by lightning strikes during the early morning hours.

In Crawley, firefighters are currently addressing a fire in Thatcher Close, which West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed was initiated by a lightning strike.

Similarly, homes in Eastbourne and Bexhill were struck by lightning within minutes of each other shortly after midnight. Each incident required the deployment of four fire engines.

An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson reported that both residences sustained

"seriously damaged"
conditions due to the strikes. The spokesperson also noted that additional lightning strikes throughout the night complicated firefighting efforts.

"Firefighters continued to work at the scene in Bexhill, using an aerial ladder platform as a water tower once the lightning eased.
They have been damping down hot spots and a re-inspection is planned at around 12:00."

The Eastbourne incident has since been declared closed after

"a very busy night for staff"
, according to the spokesperson.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service representative confirmed that four fire engines remain active at the Thatcher Close fire, which is also believed to have originated from a lightning strike at approximately 04:15.

There have been no reports of casualties related to any of the lightning-induced fires.

Weather Conditions and Warnings

The thunderstorms occurred following a yellow weather warning for lightning issued for extensive areas of East Sussex and Kent, effective from 02:00 to 08:00.

These storms followed several days of elevated temperatures and red weather warnings for extreme heat.

The Met Office explains that thunderstorms are most likely when atmospheric conditions become unstable.

"During periods of hot, humid weather, especially after a few days of strong sunshine, the ingredients for this instability are often in place."
