Whip Suspended Following Criticism of Party Leadership

Karl Turner, the Member of Parliament for Hull East, has had the Labour whip suspended after making several public criticisms of Keir Starmer and Downing Street, particularly concerning recent changes to jury trials.

According to a Labour source, Turner was informed by the chief whip, Jonathan Reynolds, that his whip had been suspended due to his conduct. However, Turner denied receiving any official notification from the whips and stated that he learned about the suspension from journalists.

The suspension decision is believed to have been influenced in part by an interview Turner gave to Jody McIntyre, a campaigner who stood against Labour’s Jess Phillips in the 2024 elections.

Turner posted on X:

“I am being told that I have had the whip suspended but I have not had any notification from the whips about this. It seems journalists have been told but I have not.”

A Labour source refuted claims that the suspension was due to Turner’s opposition to judicial reforms, stating that complaints had been made about his conduct both online and within Parliament by other MPs.

Opposition to Judicial Reforms

Turner, who previously served as shadow solicitor general but was not appointed to a government role, has been a vocal opponent of reforms proposed by the Ministry of Justice. These reforms aim to reduce the number of jury trials and introduce new judge-only courts. Turner had even threatened to resign and trigger a by-election over the issue.

He described the reforms as deeply misguided and claimed to have the support of at least 60 MPs willing to vote against them. Despite this, he abstained during the second reading of the bill, hoping to encourage changes through the parliamentary process.

Turner referenced his personal experience with the criminal justice system, having been charged with handling stolen goods in a case that was later dismissed due to insufficient evidence.

He has previously acknowledged being on a “conduct warning” from the whips and suggested that if suspended, he might consider initiating a by-election.

Criticism of Number 10 and Internal Party Tensions

In recent months, Turner has been openly critical of Number 10, accusing them of briefing against him, particularly targeting the former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney. Turner has referred to McSweeney as “McSwindle” on social media and insinuated that he orchestrated the theft of a mobile phone.

Turner further alleged that McSweeney continues to exert influence behind the scenes, stating that several MPs are “very angry” about the situation.

Context of Interview with Jody McIntyre

Jody McIntyre, who interviewed Turner, stood against Jess Phillips in Birmingham Yardley during the 2024 elections. McIntyre campaigned on a platform critical of Labour’s stance on the Israeli attacks on Gaza. Phillips won the seat by a narrow margin of 700 votes.

Following the election, Phillips criticized McIntyre’s conduct during her victory speech after he heckled her, saying:

“I see we’re going to continue with the class we had during the campaign … I didn’t bring my children here tonight, because I knew this would happen and they deserve better.”
