Fire Incident at RAF Fairford
A fire has erupted at a UK military base, prompting nearby residents to be advised to keep their windows closed.
The Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) reported that it was responding to a blaze in a commercial building in the Fairford area during the early hours of Sunday.
Social media reports and videos reviewed by the BBC indicate that the fire originated at a unit within RAF Fairford. This Gloucestershire base, situated close to the Wiltshire border, is currently utilized by the United States Air Force (USAF) for launching operations against Iran.
A spokesperson from GFRS issued a warning to local residents:
"Residents are advised to keep their doors and windows closed due to smoke from the fire."
Strategic Importance of RAF Fairford
On 1 March, the UK government announced its agreement to permit British military bases to be used for "defensive" strikes targeting Iranian missile sites.
RAF Fairford is equipped with a long runway that can accommodate all three types of USAF long-range bombers: the B-1, B-2, and B-52.
