Arctic Air Brings Snow to Scotland Days After Warmest Day Recorded

Snow has fallen in parts of Scotland just days after the warmest day of the year, as Arctic air causes a sharp weather shift. Forecasters say such fluctuations are typical for spring.

Snowfall in Scotland Following Warm Spell

Snow has been falling across parts of Scotland just five days after the country experienced its warmest day of the year so far.

Nethy Bridge in the Highlands and Braemar in Aberdeenshire were among the locations to receive snowfall.

Forecasters attributed the change in weather to a "plunge" of Arctic air affecting the region this week.

Last week, temperatures exceeded 20C at Fyvie in Aberdeenshire.

BBC Scotland weather presenter Kirsteen Macdonald highlighted the recent sharp contrasts in Scotland's weather.

"We recorded our warmest day of the year so far a mere five days ago, with Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire, reaching 20.2C with glorious sunshine and high pressure influencing conditions."

She explained the shift in weather patterns this week:

"This week is very different. Low pressure-driven weather took us in to the new week, anchored to the north.
It then pulled away to the east, with a frontal system moving away southwards, opening the floodgates to a cold Arctic plunge of air."

Snowfall Not Uncommon for Season

Kirsteen Macdonald noted that the combination of showers and cold air created ideal conditions for sleet and snow.

"Snow isn't unusual though at this time of the year."

She added that spring is a transitional season characterized by significant fluctuations between warm and cold weather, as well as dry and wet conditions.

"Spring is a transition season, with big swings at times between warm and cold weather, as well as dry and wet fare."

The remainder of the week is expected to be changeable and occasionally unsettled, with forecasts indicating periods of rain alongside drier, brighter intervals and continued cold air.
