Serious Cyclist Injury at Hyde Park Corner

A 34-year-old cyclist remains in a "serious" condition following a collision involving a lorry at Hyde Park Corner in central London, according to police reports.

Grosvenor Place, a key dual carriageway connecting Hyde Park Corner with Victoria and running along the perimeter of Buckingham Palace, was closed for several hours after the incident, which occurred shortly after 16:30 BST on Saturday.

Approximately 10 police vehicles attended the scene as investigations continued into the evening. Within the cordoned area, a Lime bike, a cement lorry, two cars, and a moped were parked, alongside debris scattered on the road.

Police Appeal for Dashcam Footage

The Metropolitan Police have issued an appeal for anyone with dashcam footage of the collision to come forward to assist with their inquiries.

A police officer present at the scene informed the BBC that the cyclist was in a "serious" condition on Saturday night. The Met Police stated they were awaiting further updates on his condition.

"Police and emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance (HEMS), attended and the cyclist, a 34-year-old man, was taken to a nearby hospital.
"The driver stopped at the scene and is assisting police with inquiries. Inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing."

Crash Location and Road Conditions

The collision appeared to have occurred at a tight corner where vehicles merge from the busy Hyde Park Corner roundabout onto a dual carriageway. Notably, there is no dedicated cycle lane at this location.

Emergency Response Details

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service confirmed that ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response vehicles, an incident response officer, and the air ambulance were dispatched to the scene. The cyclist was transported to a major trauma centre as a priority.

Traffic Disruptions and Related Incidents

Transport for London issued a travel update on Saturday evening advising drivers to seek alternative routes due to delays on several major roads surrounding the crash site.

This incident occurred one day after a collision between an e-scooter rider and a police officer on foot outside Buckingham Palace gates, just one street away. Both individuals were taken to a major trauma centre but were assessed as not having serious injuries.

Safety Concerns at Hyde Park Corner

Hyde Park Corner was identified by the London Cycling Campaign in 2022 as one of the most hazardous junctions for cyclists in London.

A report published in October by University College London academics found that the most frequent causes of near-misses involving cyclists, other road users, and pedestrians included close passes, vehicles turning across cyclists’ paths, and vehicles pulling out from side roads or parking spaces.

Of the 94 narrowly avoided crashes studied, 58 occurred during peak commuting hours, and 69 took place on roads lacking cycling infrastructure.
