Major Drug Seizure in Joint PSNI and An Garda Síochána Operation
Suspected cannabis with an estimated street value of £4 million was seized during a coordinated operation between the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and An Garda Síochána (Irish police).
The discovery occurred on Monday when officers searched a lorry traveling from Scotland to Larne Harbour. The drugs were concealed within boxes inside the vehicle.
Authorities believe the seized cannabis was intended to supply various organised crime groups operating across the island of Ireland.
A 53-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of possession of a class B controlled drug and possession with intent to supply. He remains in custody.
Joint Agency Task Force Targets Cross-Jurisdictional Crime
The operation was conducted by the Joint Agency Task Force, which was established to address organised crime that spans multiple jurisdictions.
A police spokesperson emphasized the commitment of all officers involved in the alliance to combat drug smuggling and its consequences.
"Some people may think that the illegal distribution of cannabis is not a big deal.
I'd ask them to just take a moment to think about the violence and exploitation that the organised criminals behind this could have wreaked upon our communities with the millions of pounds of profit they potentially stood to make".
"All officers involved in the alliance are committed to reducing the misery caused by drug smuggling".
