Knife Attack at Aberdeen School Leads to Children's Hearing Referral
A 15-year-old girl who assaulted a 12-year-old girl with a knife at Hazlehead Academy in Aberdeen has been referred to the children's hearing system. The attacker, whose identity is protected due to her age, had previously admitted to assault to the danger of life following the incident that occurred last year.
The victim was taken to Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital for treatment and was subsequently discharged.
At Aberdeen Sheriff Court, Sheriff Craig Findlater stated he was satisfied that remitting the case to the children's hearing system was appropriate, rather than processing the girl through the adult justice system. The sheriff described the case as "obviously a highly upsetting case".
The father of the injured girl expressed relief that the attacker had "admitted the wrongdoing".
Details of the Incident
The attack took place on the morning of 24 April last year at Hazlehead Academy, located on Groats Road in Aberdeen. At the time of the offence, the attacker was 14 years old.
She admitted to repeatedly striking the victim on the head with a knife, causing severe injury, permanent disfigurement, and placing the victim's life in danger. Additionally, she admitted to being in possession of a knife on the same day.
Statements from Family and Authorities
In a statement released through law firm Digby Brown, the victim's father said:
"Schools should be safe environments and no parent, child or teacher should ever expect to have to deal with the prospect of attacks with weapons.
Our daughter was significantly affected by this attack and her recovery remains our ongoing priority."
An Aberdeen City Council spokesperson added:
"We continue to support the school community."
