Fatal Avalanche in the French Alps

On Friday, an avalanche in the French Alps resulted in the deaths of two British nationals and one French individual.

The two British victims were part of a group of five people skiing off-piste in Val d'Isère, accompanied by an instructor, according to a spokesperson for the resort who spoke to the BBC.

Albertville prosecutor Benoit Bachelet stated that the French national was skiing alone at the time of the avalanche.

Another British person involved sustained minor injuries, Bachelet added.

Prior to the incident, France's national weather service had issued a red alert for avalanche risk in the area on Thursday.

The ski instructor who accompanied the British group was unharmed and has tested negative for substances following blood and drug tests, according to Bachelet.

A manslaughter investigation has been initiated by the Albertville public prosecutor's office. The inquiry will be conducted by the CRS Alpes mountain rescue police.
