The politician set to continue as Jersey's Chief Minister has committed to addressing the cost of living, promoting increased investment, and sustaining the growth of housing supply.
Lyndon Farnham's candidacy is uncontested, and he is scheduled to present his vision statement for the role at the inaugural meeting of the newly elected States Assembly following the island election on 7 June.
In his statement, Farnham expressed his aspiration for Jersey to be a place where residents can
"afford to live well"with housing
"within reach of more islanders"and emphasized the importance of the government managing finances responsibly.
He further stated:
"Above all, I want Jersey to be a confident island that looks forward with optimism and ambition."
'Outward looking'
Farnham does not support austerity measures but expects the government to demonstrate
"the same financial responsibility that households and businesses exercise every day".
He also pledged that the government would continue efforts to reduce
"unnecessary reliance"on consultants.
Farnham aims to enhance Jersey's growth potential and create opportunities in sectors such as digital technology, sustainable energy, and other
"high-value"industries, alongside continued support for the finance sector.
Having served as Chief Minister since 2024, Farnham highlighted that the successful delivery of the new hospital would be among the
"defining responsibilities"of the government, emphasizing it must be
"delivered on time, properly governed and financially controlled".
He noted the government's obligation to respond to demographic challenges, including an ageing population and declining birth rates.
Farnham also underscored the necessity for Jersey to strengthen its international competitiveness.
He stated:
"We should be outward-facing, ambitious and ready to seize opportunities wherever they arise."
The States Greffe confirmed that, as there are no other candidates, members of the States Assembly will not be required to vote on Farnham's nomination.
Farnham will officially assume his position only after all ministers have been appointed at the States meeting scheduled for 29 June.
He is required to submit his list of ministerial nominations to the States Greffe by 26 June, with other nominations permitted from representatives the following week.
