Tram Derailment Incident in Milan
At least one person has died and 39 others have sustained injuries, some serious, following a tram derailment in Milan, a city in northern Italy.
The incident occurred around 16:00 local time (15:00 GMT) on Vittorio Veneto street, where the crowded tram reportedly crashed into the side of a building.
The fatality is believed to have been caused by the tram striking the individual, while the majority of the injured are passengers aboard the tram. Numerous ambulances have been dispatched to the scene, and reports indicate that some individuals remain trapped within the wreckage.
Eyewitness Accounts
Passengers recounted hearing an unusual noise beneath the tram, after which it veered off its track, accelerated, and collided with a building.
"I thought it was an earthquake. I was sitting down and I fell on the floor, along with the other passengers," one man told Ansa news agency. "It was terrible."
"I just heard an enormous bang," said 27-year-old Anna, who was in an office nearby, quoted by AFP. "I saw a bit of the tram had gone into a shop."
Emergency Response and Investigation
Civil protection teams have established a tent at the site to provide assistance to the injured. The cause of the derailment remains unclear, though media sources have suggested that the tram may have taken a sharp corner at excessive speed while turning off Vittorio Veneto street.
Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala, along with other city officials, has arrived at the crash site to oversee the response efforts.
