Fatal Avalanches in Austrian Alps

Five individuals lost their lives in a series of avalanches in the Austrian Alps on Friday, coinciding with heavy snowfall across the region.

Among the victims was a 42-year-old German man who was caught in an avalanche alongside his 16-year-old son, according to police reports. The teenager was airlifted to a hospital from the slope in Nauders, located near the Swiss-Italian border.

Additionally, three skiers were killed in an avalanche near the well-known St Anton resort. A snowboarder also died after being buried in the adjacent Vorarlberg region.

Austria has recorded at least 21 avalanche-related deaths this winter season, with numerous fatalities reported throughout the Alps.

Current Avalanche Risk and Incident Details

The avalanche risk remains elevated in parts of Tyrol, where avalanches are expected. Two fatal avalanches occurred on Friday in off-piste areas within this region.

Police informed Austrian media that the avalanche near St Anton am Arlberg, which resulted in the deaths of three men, appeared to have been triggered by the skiers themselves.

According to public broadcaster ORF, two of the deceased were American and Polish nationals, while the third was a 21-year-old Austrian who succumbed to injuries in hospital.

In the same incident, two other men were rescued with injuries following a major operation involving four mountain rescue teams, three helicopters, and emergency services.

Additional Fatality and Regional Impact

Elsewhere in Austria, a 53-year-old man died after being crushed by a snow plough in the northern city of Linz. The vehicle slid down a set of stairs where the man had been clearing snow, with ORF reporting that he died at the scene.

The heavy snowfall also caused power outages and significant transport disruptions on Friday, particularly in the south-east of the country.

The Red Cross was deployed to assist individuals stranded in traffic jams in the state of Styria, where a motoring organisation described the roads as

"virtually inaccessible to private vehicles"
.

Vienna International Airport was temporarily closed in the morning, with afternoon flights experiencing

"disrupted"
services.

Context of Avalanche Fatalities in the Alps

The number of avalanche-related deaths in the Alps this year has been higher than usual. This includes three British nationals who were killed earlier this month in France's La Grave.
