Explosion Damages Jewish School in Amsterdam
An explosion has caused damage to a Jewish school in Amsterdam, described by the city's mayor as "a deliberate attack against the Jewish community." The incident occurred early on Saturday in a residential neighborhood on the south side of the city.
Mayor Femke Halsema issued a press release stating that the explosion resulted in limited damage, and no injuries were reported. Police and firefighters responded promptly to the scene. According to Halsema, CCTV footage captured a person placing the explosive device.
Security Measures and Related Arrests
Security at synagogues and Jewish institutions in Amsterdam had already been increased following an arson attack on a synagogue in central Rotterdam on Friday night.
Later on Friday, police arrested three men aged between 18 and 19, and a 17-year-old boy. The arrests followed the stopping of a car near another synagogue, with the driver’s description matching one of the suspects involved in the Rotterdam synagogue attack.
Authorities have launched a "large-scale investigation into this serious incident" and have appealed for witnesses to come forward. A police spokesperson stated,
"It is not yet clear whether the suspects planned to detonate an explosive or set fire to another synagogue as well."
No motive has been provided for the arrests.
Investigation and Related Incidents
An unverified video showing an explosion near a building resembling the targeted synagogue circulated on social media on Friday. Police are examining this footage as part of their ongoing investigation.
In a related incident, an explosion caused a fire at a synagogue in Liège on Monday.
Mayor’s Statement on the Attack
Regarding the attack on the school, Mayor Halsema said,
"This is a cowardly act of aggression against the Jewish community.
Jewish people in Amsterdam are increasingly confronted with antisemitism. This is unacceptable."
Context of Rising Concerns
Concerns about potential attacks on Jewish communities worldwide have increased following recent events and responses from Tehran.
