Future Sark Initiative Launched
A new community-led discussion focused on determining the long-term future of Sark has officially commenced.
The Future Sark project was introduced through a presentation held at Island Hall, which was attended by the lieutenant governor of Guernsey along with approximately 100 island residents.
Citizen-Driven Approach
Steve Skelton, representing Question Factory—the organisation managing Future Sark—explained that the initiative is "designed to be driven by citizens" to enable them to express their views on the issues that matter most to them and their island home.
"Most people were concerned about issues including protecting the natural environment, and having a prosperous economy and strong community, and 'we get the chance to really understand what that might mean for Sark'."
Skelton added that Future Sark will engage with individuals from various sectors of the island's economy to gather insights on the current concerns affecting the community.
Engagement and Timeline
Organisers stated that residents will have opportunities to share their perspectives starting from late April through a series of events, with workshops planned for June.
A survey is scheduled to be launched during the summer months. The findings will be compiled into a report to be submitted to Chief Pleas in September, with the intention of adopting it as a long-term "map for the future" of Sark.
Additionally, islanders will be invited to submit videos and messages expressing what they appreciate about the island and suggestions for improvements.
Encouraging Democratic Participation
Skelton encouraged community members to question prospective candidates in the upcoming elections, expected to take place around December, regarding how they plan to utilise the Future Sark plan.
"It's very much something designed to strengthen the islanders' role in their own democracy."
