Explosion at Jewish School in Amsterdam
An explosion at a Jewish school in Amsterdam has been described as a "deliberate attack against the Jewish community" by Femke Halsema, the mayor of the Dutch capital.
The blast occurred overnight and caused limited damage to the outer wall of the school located in the Buitenveldert district. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Official Reactions
Mayor Halsema condemned the incident, stating:
"This is a cowardly act of aggression towards the Jewish community."
She emphasized that Amsterdam must remain a safe place for Jewish residents.
Prime Minister Rob Jetten also addressed the situation, declaring:
"There must be no place for antisemitism" in the Netherlands.
Security Measures and Investigation
Security had already been increased at Jewish institutions following a suspected arson attack on a synagogue in Rotterdam the previous Friday.
Emergency services, including firefighters and police, responded promptly to the scene after the explosion at the school.
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage that reportedly shows an individual placing explosives at the site.
Following the incident, Mayor Halsema acknowledged the community's concerns:
"I understand the fear and anger of Jewish Amsterdammers who are increasingly confronted with antisemitism."
An investigation is ongoing, though police have not publicly commented on potential motives behind the attack.
International Response
Later on Saturday, the Israeli foreign ministry issued a statement highlighting the situation in the Netherlands:
"In the Netherlands, an antisemitism epidemic is raging."
The statement referenced recent attacks in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, as well as the "pogrom against Israelis in Amsterdam in November 2024," referring to an assault on Israeli football fans in the city.
"Where will the next attack be? The Dutch government needs to do much more to fight antisemitism,"
the Israeli ministry added.
Context of Rising Concerns
In recent days, there have been heightened concerns about potential targeting of Jewish and US communities worldwide, following joint Israeli-US military strikes against Iran.
