Deadly Explosion in Kaung Tat Village
An explosion has resulted in the deaths of at least 55 people and injured dozens more in Kaung Tat, a village located in Namkham Township, Shan State, Myanmar, an area under insurgent control, according to information received by the BBC.
A source familiar with the situation on the ground reported that 25 women and 30 men lost their lives in the incident. Other reports have indicated slightly different casualty numbers. Rescue teams are actively searching for and extracting individuals trapped beneath the rubble.
Cause and Context of the Explosion
The Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which controls the area and has been engaged in ongoing conflict with Myanmar's military junta, stated that explosives used for mining and quarrying operations detonated unexpectedly.
Residents have described scenes of devastation and confusion following the explosion. One resident shared on social media that many initially believed the blast was the result of an air strike.
Impact on the Community
Children were among those killed, and hundreds of homes sustained damage, affecting nearly an entire neighborhood, according to the social media post.
"By sheer luck, my phone saved my life," the resident wrote.
"I was sitting in my bedroom eating noodles and looking at my phone. If I had been eating in the kitchen, I probably would not be alive today."
The resident, who sustained a minor leg injury and whose home was destroyed, described the aftermath as filled with panic and grief.
"People were crying, calling out for their parents," she wrote. "It felt as if the world had come to an end."
She questioned the safety measures in place, expressing concern over why a facility containing explosives was permitted to operate near residential areas.
"Families of those killed would not be satisfied unless the authorities provided a full explanation."
